The Cost of Breeding: Why "Show-Bred" Puppies are Priced Higher
For those wondering why purebred puppies cost so much...
This is just a general idea of the tests and costs associated with breeding Labrador Retrievers. Other breeds have other tests. --------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hips x-rayed - $400
Elbows x-rayed - $100
CERF (eye exam) - $30 - $60 (repeated annually)
PRA screen (progressive retinal atrophy) - $65
EIC screen (exercise induced collapse) - $65
CNM screen (Centronuclear Myopathy)- $65
Dilute - $65
HNPK (Hereditary Nasal Parakeratosis) - $65
Copper Toxicosis - $65
Cardiac echo (heart exam) – $250-$500
OFA registration fees - $85
Stud fee (if applicable; if own stud is used, double up on previous costs) - $1500 and up
Ultrasound for pregnancy confirmation - $150 - $250
This is a general example for ONE dog. Some of these tests are not repeated for multiple litters from the same dog, but they MUST be done for the first litter. That is not optional.
This does NOT include the dog show entries, hotel & travelling costs. Only purebred breeders have these costs.
Not to mention the amount of time, love and heartbreak put into each and every litter in order to move further with their breed of choice.
All of these tests and precautions are taken in order to ensure that each puppy is healthy and genetically sound.
So, the next time you decide to discredit responsible breeders for listing their puppies at such a high price, just remember:
Either pay the breeder ONCE or pay the vet FOR LIFE.
